»Previous research on sexual violence has focused on individual level behaviors that typically include a single victim in an isolated event. Social scientists have failed to examine sexual violence as a group level phenomenon, which is often exhibited during war. In this dissertation, I use a comparative case study methodology to analyze court transcripts from the United Nations detailing the conflicts of the former Yugoslavia, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone. The purpose is to examine the process by which sexual violence moves from an individual behavior to a group level activity. A better understanding of how sex offending becomes a group behavior will expand on the current literature on collective and sexual violence, identify pre-conflict indicators of collective sexual violence, and provide strategies for post-conflict mediations in warring countries.«
